Zee Nxumalo’s stunning new single “Hamba” proves to be an instant hit with music fans
Music fans across SA have been swooning over teen sensation Zee Nxumalo’s latest single, “Hamba”. The new single is a catchy and emotional ballad that sees the 19-year-old afro-pop newcomer crooning about an unrequited love.
“It’s a song that’s basically explaining how a girl who wasn’t appreciated during the duration of a relationship and now she’s saying ukuthi hamba uzobuya, which means “leave, you’ll come back”.
“Hamba” is about moving on from people that don’t appreciate the value I once presented to them. As the saying goes “i’vili liyajika”… at some point, I will have also elevated in life, and those that hurt and deserted me before will see me rise again.”
Despite this only being her second single, Zee has already garnered a massive social media audience that totals over 300K across Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok. On release day, “Hamba” was playlisted on several streaming services including Apple Music’s prestigious Mzansi Soul playlist. On Thursday evening, she premiered the official visualizer for the single on her newly verified YouTube page.
Zee’s instant buzz this early in her career isn’t something she takes for granted. “Sometimes it feels surreal and I just have to pinch myself and say “this is really me”. I’m overwhelmed but more than anything I appreciate it all and I can’t wait to share the rest of my career with people that believe in me.”
Hamba’s release comes weeks after Zee’s feature on Zandimaz’s hit amapiano single “Maphupho” went viral on TikTok a few weeks ago. Despite only having been out for a few weeks it’s already garnered over 150K plays across streaming services and is currently sitting on 25K Shazams, which indicates that it’s a song people are regularly hearing out and about and searching for.
