Wytchwood Indie Game Release: First Impression

By  |

Wytchwood is a crafting adventure indie game “set in a land of gothic fables and fairytales”; players start the game as the old witch of the woods who explores the strange countryside, collects magic ingredients, brews spells, and passes judgement upon unpredictable characters and creatures. The game was developed by Alientrap and published by Alientrap, Whitethorn Digital, and WhisperGames, releasing the indie adventure video game on the 9th of December 2021. With 96% positive reviews on the Steam website, many users are excited to get their hands on the game and see for themselves what the hype is all about, so if you are also looking to buy the game, read on for first impressions!

This video game has a very devoted storybook art style, where players can gather, collect, grow, and craft bizarre ingredients, such as toxic toadstools, eye of newt, and bottles fear. Researching devious spells and sorcery is all a part of everyday chores, turning greedy characters into frogs and tricking the wicked with cunning curses. There is a lot to explore in this world, uncovering personas and fantastic narratives; players will need to use their wit and intelligence to solve puzzles in order to beat the monsters of the forest.

Described as an “adorable” game by many reviews on Steam, this fantasy game gets more brownie points for its great music and sounds within the playthrough. There is a relaxed vibe and no “cringey” dialogues as an added bonus too; in fact, from the very beginning there is no need to worry about your attention being diverted, as without being patronising, you are able to learn and pick up on the gaming controls pretty early on, being able to enjoy the quests and tasks at hand.

One review on Steam was by user ‘Tobytoe’, who said, “I don’t usually leave reviews, but I have been blown away by this game and feel the need to share how amazing this game is… Ok so I am not very far in, but I have just been chilling out, enjoying the scenery and happy vibes. The game has a really nice atmosphere, and the artwork is something special in my opinion. The dialogue is interesting and funny… I find myself laughing out loud at times. So far, no bugs but as I said, it’s early days. I am so impressed with the game so far.”

Another review by ‘theAgamer11’ said, “Wytchwood is a story-driven game about a slightly cranky old witch travelling a diverse fairy-tale world, meeting colourful characters, collecting ingredients, and crafting unusual potions and tools to fulfil a contract she doesn’t recall making. The game is very straightforward and linear, so don’t pick this up expecting challenging puzzles or a choose-your-own-adventure style game. That said, I beta-tested this game a few weeks before release and Wytchwood is honestly one of the most polished games I’ve tested. The art style is unique and attractive, the music/ambiance is very pleasant, and the story is well written. The gameplay loop, despite being fairly simple, didn’t feel at all stale throughout my entire playthrough. This game takes 10-15 hours to complete and is well worth its price.”
