By  |

Uncharted is an upcoming action-adventure film adaptation of the video game with the same name; directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film entered development all the way back in 2008. Now that the film is schedule to theatrically release by Sony Pictures on the 11th of February 2022 in the UK, and 18th of February in the US, let us look at what we know so far about the film, as well as what the video game version is all about.

The game Uncharted is a series created by Amy Hennig, developed by Naughty Dog, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation consoles. The main series of the games follows Nathan Drake, who is a treasure hunter, travelling across the world to uncover various historical mysteries. The series of the games are as follows in order of release: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007), Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011), and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016).

The game series has been universally acclaimed and been commercially successful, having shipped more than 41 million units, making it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The series has been widely recognised by critics and video game publications for raising the standards of single-player video games, praising it for high production values, quality in storytelling, character design and animation, voice acting, realistic graphics, technical innovation, musical score, gameplay mechanics, and delivering an enjoyable cinematic gaming experience to players.

For the film adaptation of Uncharted, the screenplay is written by Rafe Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway; the story is created by Rafe Judkins, therefore, we can expect many great things from people who have previously worked in things like Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Iron Man, and Punisher: War Zone.

Uncharted will star Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan, along with Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas in supporting roles. There were many rumours since 2008 that Nathan Fillion and Chris Pratt would take the lead role of Nathan Drake, however, after a long and complicated production process, Tom Holland was cast as the lead role in May of 2017 and commenced filming in March of 2020, finishing the process in the following October.

The statement by Sony Pictures Releasing is as follows:

“Based on one of the best-selling, most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, Uncharted introduces audiences to the young street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and showcases his first treasure hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg). In an action-adventure epic that spans the globe, the two go in dangerous pursuit of ‘the greatest treasure never found’ while also tracking clues that may lead to Nathan’s long-lost brother.”
