The Power of Makeup
Makeup can be fun and experimental for some, and for others it can be just a simple routine to enhance a feature or two. I used to find myself wondering if my face is really my own when I put too much makeup on, on the other hand when I put minimal makeup on, I feel much more like myself while still appreciating the minor enhancements for lack of a better term.
Cosmetics have been popular for decades and continues to rise within the beauty industry, especially with such a big beauty industry full of artists and brands. We are advertised so many different products that sometimes we feel the need to become a part of the group who buy and apply these new products. This includes certain trends in makeup, when someone releases a completely new technique or tool, and most people follow along, feeling that it is a vital part of the whole routine. An example of this are influencers and makeup artists, who have gathered a large following and created partnerships with brands.
However, makeup is a choice; it is about how you want to express yourself with art aka makeup. Many wear it to enhance their natural beauty, or as a hobby.
Some people unfortunately receive hate and backlash for their makeup, one of which is NikkiTutorials, who received comments that she only wore makeup because of insecure reasons, like self-hatred, or for the attention of men.
In response, Nikki created a trending hashtag #ThePowerOfMakeup, which went with a video of one half of the face with makeup and the other left bare. This empowered other makeup followers to love themselves and enjoy the art they create with makeup. The video concept emphasised the power of makeup and what it can do for the individual using it.
In the description of the video, she said, “I feel like lately makeup shaming has become a thing. It’s as if putting makeup on to have fun is a shame. Therefore, I thought it would be cool to show you the power of makeup. A transformation. Because makeup… is FUN!”
Most people do not realise that makeup is one of the many tools that can be embraced and used to empower many individuals around the world. Rather than commenting on the way others choose to appear, it is time for people to respectfully take a step back and focus on their own wellbeing.
