The story is about Tony Soprano, a New Jersey-based Italian-American gangster. The series follows the difficulties that the main protagonist Tony Soprano faces while balancing his family life and his role as the leader of a criminal organisation.

The actor James Gandolfini portrayed Tony Soprano in the show, widely regarded as among the greatest performances in television history sadly passed away in 2013, leaving behind notable work in films such as True Romance, Crimson Tide, The Last Castle and The Taking of Pelham 123. In the wake of the prequal being produced; James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini, has taken on the mantel to fill the big shoes his father left as the lead on the upcoming film to portray the young version of Tony Soprano.

The Many Saints of Newark is set in 1960s and 1970s in Neward of New Jersey, with the 1967 riots in the city used as a backdrop for tensions between the Italian-American and the African-American communities. This film follows the teenage years of Tony Soprano in the midst of a violent gang war that his uncle and his family are involved in.

Written by David Chase, and Lawrence Konner, the film is directed by Alan Taylor, with the cast including Alessandro Nivola (Jurassic Park III), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton Musical), Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Corey Stoll (House of Cards), Billy Magnussen (Aladdin and No Time to Die), Michela De Rossi (Boys Cry), John Magaro (Orange is the New Black), Ray Liotta (Field of Dreams), and Vera Farmiga (Roar).

After the release at the Tribeca Film Festival, critics have expressed their positive reviews for the upcoming film. There are even expectations for a sequel film after this, according to some reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, in hopes of continuing the story of Tony Soprano. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the film currently holds an approval rating of 81% based on 37 reviews. On Metacritic, the film has an average score of 67 out of 100 based on 16 critics, which indicates favourable reviews.
