The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 announcements

The fifth season had been confirmed back in December 2020, and now that the fourth season is over and news about the new upcoming season have started to surface, it is time to start preparing for what else Gilead has to offer.

The release dates for season five have not been announced as of yet, however, we are expecting the show to come back sometime in later summer or in autumn of 2022.

Based on the show’s ending, the following cast are expected to return for the upcoming season:

Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne

Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford

Alexis Bledel as Emily

Madeline Brewer as Janine

Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia

OT Fagbenle as Luke

Max Minghella as Nick

Samira Wiley as Moira

Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence

Amanda Brugel as Rita

Moreover, the plot may be focused on exploring June Osborne’s trauma following her escape from Gilead.

The head of originals for Hulu, Jordan Hellman, said, “The success of The Handmaid’s Tale remains paramount for us. That said, what is also most important to us is that we close out that show in creative fashion that feels organic so we are in constant communication, literally right now, talking with Bruce [Miller], Lizzie [Moss] and Warren [Littlefield], about what the best way to end The Handmaid’s Tale is. We haven’t landed on an answer… I imagine we’re going to be able to answer that question in the coming months.”

It is not yet confirmed whether the fifth season will be the last or not, following on from Hellman’s comment.

Although on the bright side, the spin-off series focused on Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments will be released after The Handmaid’s Tale ends.

The Testaments novel is set 15 years in the future from the novel version of Handmaid’s Tale. It explores the legacy that June leaves behind in Gilead and we are given three different perspectives through three women, one of whom is Aunt Lydia.

At least we know that once season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale ends, and if it happens to definitely be the last season, then there is something to expect after it as it will not be the end for Gilead.
