SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT WITHDRAWS SUPPORT FOR LALELA MSWANE IN ISRAEL

By  |

The South African government has chosen to withdraw support for Miss South Africa, this decision is coming after the organization refused to pull out of the Miss Universe contest which is being held in Israel, amid calls for a boycott in support of the Palestinian people.

Organizations in support of Palestine have called on Lalela Mswane, who was recently crowned Miss South Africa as well the pageant organizers to boycott the event which will be held on the 12th of December 2021 in Eilat Israel, Andrae Meza of Mexico is expected to crown the new Miss Universe.

South Africa has enjoyed a good relationship with the Palestinian people and are not in support of how Israel is treating the Palestinians, South Africa is reminded of their own apartheid crimes against the black people of South Africa However Israel has denied an of these allegations that have been brought forth. Many other organizations are on board with the decision to boycott the event.

“At this stage, the participation of so-called Miss South Africa would be irrelevant, Nobody can say she is representing the country… (it) would leave her absolutely alone with the organisers who seem hell bent to proceed.”,” said Bram Hanekom, a board member at Palestinian solidarity group Africa4Palestine.

Other African countries have applauded South Africa’s decision to boycott however they have been some comments on South Africa’s decision because they feel it is very hypocritical of South Africa who not too long ago was at the heart of Xenophobic attacks, which was responsible for many deaths and loss of business, so for them to take a stance against the happenings in Israel is commendable but one can not overlook the irony of the whole thing. People in Other countries such as Zambia and Nigeria started to loot all South African owned store’s in order to put pressure on the same South African government who had nothing to say about the situation in their own back yard.
