Simone Biles feels the weight of the expectations on her
Gymnast Simone Biles, along with the rest of her U.S. team, finished behind Russia in qualifying during the first day of the 2021 Olympics for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in Tokyo.
The team are planning to come back on Tuesday 27th July in the final to try and win their third straight Olympic gold medal. The individual final is set on Thursday 29th July.
As a five-time Olympic medallist with four golds and one bronze, Simone Biles is expected to win five gold medals. This would tie her with Larisa Latynina, who currently holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals by a gymnast (male or female) with nine gold medals.
Due to the errors and struggles on Sunday 25th July, Simone Biles feels the pressure to come back strong for the final. In fact, the expectations are so high, Biles went on Instagram and posted to say, “It wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it.”
She added to this and said, “I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times.”
As the gymnast favourite to become the first woman in more than 50 years to repeat as Olympic champion, there is no doubt that there is immense pressure on Simone Biles.
This was the first time since the 2010 World Championships that the U.S. team didn’t come first place.
We will find out in the final on Tuesday whether Simone Biles and the rest of the U.S. team manages to succeed in coming first place or not.
