ROBIN THICKE IS IN TROUBLE AGAIN FOR HIS 2013 SONG ‘BLURRED LINES’
Singer Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and rapper TI, released Blurred Lines back in 2013, a party jam talking about a woman in a nightclub who may or may not be interested in him. The song has yet again caught attention but this time for the wrong reasons. When the song first came out a blogger branded it as a ‘sexual assault’ song, many felt that the song promotes a very worrying message towards sex and consent and was triggering to victims of sexual abuse.

Kirsty Haigh, EUSA’s vice-president of services had this to say about the song, “This is about ensuring that everyone is fully aware that you need enthusiastic consent before sex. The song says: ‘You know you want it.’ Well, you can’t know they want it unless they tell you they want it.”
When the song first caught heat, Robin Thicke did not understand the full capacity of these allegations, he made a comment when asked and said ‘what is wrong with being sexy?”. The song which was said to glorify sexual assault culture and was banned in certain nightclubs and university campuses.

Pharrell Williams who was also on the song recently opened up to GQ magazine and denounced the song, he said he was embarrassed by some of his earlier music, he pointed out that some of these songs he worked on in the past catered to a ‘chauvinist culture’ and he specifically mentions Blurred lines as a turning point for him. One would argue the authenticity of his turn around because the rapper had earlier on defended the song by saying the message in the song had been ‘misconstrued’
“When you pull back and look at the entire song, the point is: She’s a good girl, and even good girls want to do things, and that’s where you have the blurred lines,” he said. “People who are agitated just want to be mad, and I accept their opinion.”
One would begin to doubt whether his recent revelations about the song are genuine or he is just trying to protect his image and save face.

The conversation about the inappropriate message in blurred lines resurfaced 2 days ago when Emily Ratajakowski a model on the set of the song accused Robin Thicke of groping her during the shooting of blurred lines music video, she has alleged that Robin groped her bare breasts from behind during the filming. She makes these allegations in her forthcoming book, she writes; “Suddenly, out of nowhere, I felt the coolness and foreignness of a stranger’s hands cupping my bare breasts from behind. “I instinctively moved away, looking back at Robin Thicke. He smiled a goofy grin and stumbled backward, his eyes concealed behind his sunglasses. My head turned to the darkness beyond the set.”
Robin Thicke now feels differently about the song and has stated that he regrets how the song made people feel and the negative impact it had on them “I had lost the intention, you know what I mean? I needed to regain my perspective and my positive intention of what my music was for and what my life was for.”
He stated that though this was not the reaction he expected from the song but is glad that it brought up a conversation about masculinity and consent, regardless of what the intentions were when the song was written.
