The flight was welcomed to Kitwe Southdowns airport in Kalulushi District by Mayor of Kalulushi Bishop Bernard Mumba, who said: “We want to appreciate Proflight Zambia for this new flight and it will not only put Kalulushi on the market but will profile Kalulushi, as the opening of this is a milestone to improve the district.”

The route is the ninth domestic destination for the airline and is expected to cater mainly to business people dealing with the area’s mining sector.

“Kitwe is the second largest city in Zambia after Lusaka and business is booming with the opening of the new Mukuba Shopping Mall a few months ago just one sign that the city is heading to the right direction,” said Captain Philip Lemba, Proflight Director of Government and Industry Affairs during the launch.

Felix Chaila, Managing Director, Zambia Tourism Board said: “As African destinations we need to look at sub-regional travel, need to look to domestic travel other than business travel that is well known for Copperbelt, we need to look at tourist travel in Kalulushi.”

Proflight flies direct from Lusaka to Kitwe twice a day on weekdays and once on Sundays. The morning flight leaves Lusaka at 07:15hrs and arrives in Kitwe at 08:30hrs and afternoon flight departs 16:20hrs and arrives back in Lusaka at 17:05hrs. From Kitwe, the flight leaves at 08:30hrs and arrives in Lusaka at 09:15hrs and again at 17:35hrs arriving at 18:00hrs. There is also a Sunday flight leaving Lusaka at 16:20hrs and from Kitwe at 17:30hrs.

With a population of more than 500,000, Kitwe’s existence has historically relied on the success of copper mining, and more recently has experienced commercial and agricultural growth. A city usually frequented by industrial developers, Kitwe has seen a rise in more tourist friendly attractions including hotels, shopping centres and cinemas, presenting more reasons to visit.
