Nintendo Switch Sales Surpasses Wii And PlayStation

By  |

The Nintendo Switch hybrid handheld console has reached 103.54 million units sold worldwide as of 31st of December 2021, according to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad and Nintendo’s financial report. The console has not only passed the 100 million units mark but has also reached it faster than the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Wii; additionally, the Switch surpassed the Wii, which sold 101.63 units, and the original Sony PlayStation 1, which sold 102.49 million units in its lifetime.

The platform that the Switch is not expected to surpass is the Nintendo DS, although surpassing the Wii in particular is a huge milestone for the company, due to its huge success that was followed by what was considered a business failure. The GameCube was released in 2001, but due to competition and the timing of release, it ended up being swallowed by the big companies releasing the PlayStation and Xbox.

The company’s popularity soared after the Wii release in 2006, and in addition to the Switch hardware sales, a total of 766.41 million units of software for the console have been sold. “Most of the units sold were original Switch models – 81.86 million of the 103.54 million total. The Switch Lite has sold 17.87 million units to date, while the newer OLED Switch accounts for 3.99 million units.”

This is an incredible achievement for Nintendo, which has a history for its console success; for example, the Wii managed to convert non-gamers into playing the family-accessible game like Wii Sports. This strength helped make a variety of titles popular across non-traditional gaming audiences.
