Netflix developing adaptation of comic series Grendel
Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the Dark Horse comics’ book series, Grendel, by Matt Wagner which was first launched in October 1982; almost 40 years ago, and continues to run to this day.
Andrew Dabb will be the writer, executive producer and show runner of the series, who has also worked on TV show series called Supernatural. Other executive producers include Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Chris Tongue and Matt Wagner.
Abubakr Ali will take the lead role in the series as Grendel, otherwise known as Hunter Rose. His previous roles have been in Power Book II: Ghost and Katy Keene. This role makes Abubakr Ali the first Arab Muslim male actor to portray the lead in a comic book adaptation.
Other actors and actresses starring in the series are Jaime Ray Newman from Dopesick, Julian Black Antelope from The Flash, Madeline Zima from Californication, Kevin Corrigan from Scenes from an Empty Church, Emma Ho from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Erik Palladino from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Brittany Allen from What Keeps You Alive, and Andy Mientus from The Flash.
Grendel, coming to Netflix, is a result of a first look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment, who also produced the hit series The Umbrella Academy, a feature film called Polar, and an upcoming animated series called Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles.
The comic book Grendel tells the story of a successful author named Hunter Rose, who works as Grendel at night. Grendel is an assassin that seeks to avenge the loss of a loved one, which takes him through a battle against New York’s criminal underworld.
