MAN EXONERATED IN MALCOM X MURDER SUES STATE FOR 20 MILLION

By  |

A man who was wrongfully accused of murdering Malcom X has been exonerated and is now suing the New York state over wrongful conviction, seeking at least 20 million in damages for personal injuries and a 20 year imprisonment.

Muhammad Aziz filed a lawsuit on Monday in New York’s Court of Claims through the David B. Shanies law firm. Aziz is suing for false imprisonment, unlawful detention, malicious prosecution and severe emotional and psychological distress, among other charges.

In a statement, Aziz said “I do not dwell on what my life might have been like had this travesty of justice never occurred,” but he was wounded by his conviction and the “deep and lasting trauma it caused.”

“The more than 20 years that I spent in prison were stolen from me and my family, and while the official record now recognizes the truth that has been known for decades, nothing can undo the damage that my wrongful conviction caused to all of us,” Aziz said in a statement. “Those responsible for depriving me of my liberty and for depriving my family of a husband, a father, and a grandfather should be held accountable.“

Mr Aziz was convicted of Malcom X murder, along with Khalil Islam, back in 1966, they were both paroled in 1985 and 1987 but they were not cleared of the crime until 18 November when the New York state exonerated the two after the state found evidence that was concealed by the FBI and New York Police department. Sadly Islam died back in 2009 but his estate will also be filing similar law suits on his behalf.
