Princess Mako married the love of her life who happened to be a non-royal without the usual royal traditional celebrations on Tuesday, their marriage delayed three years because he was not of royal blood. The marriage cost Mako her royal status, she received her husbands surname on the day of the marriage and has had to forgo her family name as per Japanese tradition.

Mako declined a $ 1.5 million payment to which she was entitled to for leaving the imperial family palace, she is the first member since the second world war to not receive the payment because of the criticism that surrounded her marriage.

Earlier on Mako was diagnosed with traumatic stress disorder, which she acquired after seeing negative comments that surfaced due to her marriage especially the ones concerning her husband, the couple chose not to answer questions at the news conference because she expressed unease and they opted to respond with written answers to questions that were already provided.

The couple is scheduled to move to New York after the wedding and start their new life there. “There will be different kinds of difficulties as we start our new life, but we’ll walk together as we have done so in the past,” said Mako.

Many have compared the couple to Meagan Markle and Prince Harry, in a similar fashion Prince Harry chose to marry someone who was not a royal, although Harry and Meagan were not required to quit their duties like Princess Mako was, they still felt it was necessary they were struggling emotionally with all the negative media coverage that they were subjected to. They too chose to move to America and start their new life there.
