How To Keep Your New Year Resolutions

New year, new you? Making resolutions for a brand-new year is easy, but what about keeping them? You could have made a list of 10 or more, or just a few to try and keep it realistic; however, what is most important is not the number of resolutions you make, but the method of keeping them for as long as possible, and hopefully, forever. If you have clicked yourself into this article, chances are you are one of the people who want to keep your new year resolutions, so do not worry because here I have found all the best scientifically explained methods of succeeding – your only ingredient is a little bit of willpower to work towards your goal!

Amy Morin, psychotherapist and an award-winning author of four books on mental health, has said and believes that people who struggle to keep their new year resolutions also struggle with a “lack of motivation and an internal desire to change”. She said, “Many people start resolutions because the date on the calendar changed, not because they’re actually ready to change. At other times, people create goals that aren’t measurable. They want to be ‘happier’ or ‘healthier’, but those vague statements aren’t helpful. You won’t know if you’re making progress and it doesn’t tell you what action steps to take.”
Some steps you can take:
- Establish a measurable goal
- Identify clear action steps
- Set yourself up for success
- Plan for obstacles
- Start when you are ready

Here are some scientifically proved methods that may help you in keeping your resolutions!
Make a cue plan
Saying you will do something may be too vague, so you will have to make your resolutions more specific by saying you will do something at this time of the day or this time of the week, after or before another activity.
Consider a penalty
Penalties usually help and are very simple, just choose something that you know will have an effect and do not be soft on yourself just because you are choosing your own penalty! Do not be too harsh either, you are not doing this to punish yourself.
Make it fun
Most people strive for efficiency, and feel proud when that is achieved, so make it comfortable to achieve goals while reaching your target and give yourself rewards every time you reach a step closer to what you want.
Allow yourself to take a break
It is not easy to change, so give yourself time and the patience to achieve your resolution. Once you reach it, stay consistent, but it is ok if you take a break.
