Frankfurt’s Best Food

Being one of the biggest cities in Germany, it is a shame that Frankfurt does not make the must try best Frankfurt food list for most tourists. Although, having been to the city multiple times, I can assure you that there are several foods and drinks that Frankfurt is known for and should be more visited for its culinary specialties.
The city is the largest in the Hesse state and is one of the centers of commerce and transportation for both Germany and the European Union. Frankfurt is Europe’s third largest airport, so if you are arriving from there, do try to dip into the foods of Frankfurt and try one of their many famous specialities, some of which include:
Apple Wine (Apfelwein)
Apple Wine has been the beverage of choice in Frankfurt’s pubs, and Sachsenhausen is the district of the city that specializes in Apple Wine. The drink is not the same as apple cider. Instead of being carbonated and relatively sweet, apple wine is more delicate and tarter.
Green Sauce (Grüne Soße)
Green sauce is made from eggs, oil and vinegar, salt, and seven different spices: borage, chervil, chives, cress, parsley, salad burnet, and sorrel. Green sauce is traditionally served with hard boiled eggs and boiled potatoes.
Frankfurter Sausage (Frankfurter Wurst)
The local sausages of Frankfurt are long and thin, typically made from lightly smoked pork, and generally served with bread and mustard.
Hand Cheese with Music (Handkäse mit Musik)
This is a handmade round sour milk cheese, generally served in vinegar and oil. “Mit Musik” means served with chopped onions, with the “music” part meaning that it is said to come later, resulting from the effect of the onions.
Frankfurt Crown Cake (Frankfurter Kranz)
The dessert is special to Frankfurt. It is a multi-layer cake, coated with crunchy brittle and topped with cherries or raspberries that look like the jewels of the crown.
Now that you have all the specialty foods available in Frankfurt, make sure you try them out! They are famous within Frankfurt, but not many people around the globe seem to know about these hidden gems.
