‘Fleischman is in Trouble’ Adaptation: Cast Confirmed
The 2019 best-selling debut novel called ‘Fleischman is in Trouble’, written by American writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner, is being adapted into a limited series currently in production and will air on FX and Hulu. The story is about a Manhattan couple undergoing a bitter divorce, specifically a Jewish man’s middle-age crisis. Lead actors have finally been confirmed as Jesse Eisenberg to play as Toby Fleischman, the title character, and Lizzy Caplan to play as Libby Epstein, the best friend of Toby and a journalist who narrates the novel.
In 2019, when the novel was first published by Penguin Random House on the 18th of June, Taffy Brodesser-Akner said, “This is a book about a Jew in New York. I like the idea of not explaining what a Friday night dinner is — just having a Friday night dinner. I like the idea of everyone going only to the school where they’re going to meet other Jews like them. There’s still this huge culture around Jewishness, and I’m very comfortable in it.” The author discussed how the story heavily leans into its character’s Jewish identities, along with the themes of gender roles, marriage, divorce, online dating, midlife crisis, and anxiety. An underlying theme of the book is the relegation of women to the background in a male-centric society. At one point in the book, the narrator says that “the only way to get someone to listen to a woman is to tell her story through a man”, which is what the book does.
The plot of the novel is as follow:
“Toby, a 41-year-old hepatologist, is undergoing a bitter divorce from his wife Rachel, a successful talent agent in New York. One day, she drops off their children, 11-year-old Hannah and 9-year-old Solly, at Toby’s house while he is still sleeping and takes off. She does not respond to texts or calls from him for the following weeks. The story, narrated by Toby’s college friend Libby, a former writer for a men’s magazine, follows their lives over this period and the events that led to the breakdown of their 14-year-marriage, as well as reflections of Libby’s own life.”
The novel has received critical acclaim and was selected for the longlist for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020. In a review, The Guardian called it “an honest, powerful, human story with no apologies,” and The Rolling Stone praised its “unsparing yet sympathetic depiction of the way we live now.” If this interests you in purchasing the book for yourself then click HERE for Amazon selling ‘Fleischman is in Trouble’ for only £14.99!
