Filming on the set of Rush terribly went wrong when Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that killed a 42 year old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins who was the director of photography on set. The films director was also wounded by the same prop gun, all this took place in New Mexico.
Hutchins was immediately transported by helicopter after the tragic incident but unfortunately died of her wounds while the director Souza was taken by ambulance and is receiving treatment.
“There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks, the entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by today’s tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones” a spokesperson from the production said; “We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation.”
According to Hutchins website, she had been selected as one of American cinematographer’s rising stars of 2019. Hutchins is originally from Ukraine, she grew up on the soviet military base in the arctic circle. She was the director of photography for the 2020 action film Archenemy, directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer.
“I’m so sad about losing Halyna. And so infuriated that this could happen on a set,” said Mr Mortimer in a tweet.
Movie sets usually take very strict measures over use of prop weapons but accidents are inevitable, take for instance the famous incident of Brandon Lee, son to martial art legend Bruce Lee who died on set of ‘The Crow’ after being shot by a gun that was meant to fire blanks but instead ended up killing him.
Brandon Lee’s sister Shannon responded to the news of the shooting by tweeting; “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on ‘Rust’. No-one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period.”
