Everything We Know About HBO’s The Last of Us Series

Being one of the greatest video games for its time, The Last of Us series, expected to debut in 2022, will no doubt be just as amazing; particularly as one of the most beloved stories in gaming, despite the grim characters. The American series is set to air on HBO and is said to be the largest television production in Canadian history. Filming had begun in Calgary, Alberta in July 2021, and is expected to finish in June 2022, so since we are getting closer and closer to the anticipated release, it is a good time for us to go through everything we know so far about The Last of Us.

The Last of Us story is based on the 2013 video game with the same name, developed by Naughty Dog; the series will follow Joel, a smuggler, tasked with escorting the teenager Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States filled with ‘walkers’ and ‘clickers’. The first season will consist of ten episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the latter also wrote and directed the video game.

This will be the first HBO series that is based on a video game, and it is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games. The original game composer, called Gustavo Santaolalla, will compose the series as well, and Kantemir Balagov is set to direct the pilot episode of the series.

The cast has been recently confirmed as follows:

Pedro Pascal as Joel

Bella Ramsey as Ellie

Gabriel Luna as Tommy

Merle Dandridge as Marlene

Jeffrey Pierce as Perry

Anna Torv as Tess

Nico Parker as Sarah

Murray Bartlett as Frank

Con O’Neill as Bill

The Last of Us series has been spotted filming in several places across Alberta, a province in Western Canada, and recently, the mountain town of Canmore is being transformed into a post-apocalyptic wasteland for the production. According to the Town of Canmore’s website, residents can expect to see “aesthetic changes and road closures” around the downtown area that will “temporarily transform select areas of downtown Canmore into Jackson, Wyoming.” Images of Canmore’s transformation have surfaced online, offering a sneak peek of what the show will look like once it is released.
