Like many have done following the announcement of Hakainde Hichilema as the president elect of the republic of Zambia, Copperbelt based multi award winning hip hop artist Chef 187 has congratulated the United Party for National Development (UPND) leader on his victory.

The president elect Hakainde Hichilema received 2,810,777 votes against incumbent president and the leader of the Patriotic Front (PF) Edgar Lungu who received 1,814,201, with all but one of the 156 constituencies counted.

Alongside his congratulations for the president elect; Chef 187 also took the time to ask Zambians to forgive his brother Macky II who has been receiving backlash from some fans, following his recording and release of campaign songs in support of the Patriotic Front.

He posted on his Facebook page: “Nalamwimininako pa chulu and apologize on his behalf. Fima nyimbofye filya, alefi rappa rappafye 😂. [Translation: Let me intercede and apologize on his behalf. Those where just songs, he was just rapping them]. But we learn through experiences, we live and learn. #PeoplePower.”

“History has been made. This is the Zambia we believe in, and it didn’t let us down. What a time to be alive, and what a statement for Africa and the rest of the world. Maybe now you can forgive Macky 2 and stop tagging me in his posts, and making comparisons between us. Nga fyashupa atapilile fye pa State House fipwile mo [Translation: If it’s that much of a big deal, let him just water the lawn at State House, it ends there].”

Macky II who has in the recent past performed and produced campaign songs for the Patriotic Front posted: “The People have spoken. And they have spoken loudly and clearly. Congratulations to the 7th Republican President of Zambia @hhichilema. May God bless and guide you sir.”

In the just ended polls, Macky II who is signed to Kalandanya Music Promotions (KMP) together with Yo Maps and Mampi released Solly, a PF campaign song, something that did not go well with his fans, and has resulted in the current backlash.

It is safe to say that when it comes to democracy, it is important for citizens of any nation to remember what democracy means and what it stands for. Bullying and attacking an individual due to their political preferences, should not be something that is encouraged nor should it be something that is condoned or justified. Be it physical harassment or virtual harassment and bullying the consequences for this can be dire, as no one can be able to predict the impact this sort of behaviour towards another human being can have on an individual’s mental health. So we implore individuals to learn to respect their fellow citizen’s choices as they would expect theirs to be respected. Bullying and online attacks have real consequences to real people, so think before you post.
