Bohinj: A Hidden Gem

The world is filled with many beautiful locations that are perfect for the holiday maker; however, within that vast range of options, many destinations are known due to popularity, and what you might not know is of the not so popular destinations which are equally as magnificent as holiday destinations. One of these destinations happens to be the hidden gem of Bohinj; a municipality in the Upper Carniola region of northwest Slovenia, where beautiful and unspoilt nature is preserved with tranquillity, and friendly locals. Bohinj gives you a variety of opportunities to enjoy the nature, giving you a stress free experience.
In order to experience Bohinj to the fullest, there are many things to do such as visiting the Lake Bohinj or if you are interested in more outdoors, nature and adventure sports activities, then this place should be a definite stop. Located in the foothills of the Julian Alps, with the main lakeside town of Ribčev Laz, which makes for the perfect camping spot. On the other hand, Bohinjska Bistrica is a larger town and has a greater variety of accommodation to offer. Whichever your choice you are guaranteed a great experience! Lake Bohinj hosts the beautiful Savica waterfall, which is Slovenia’s most popular waterfall and is not usually too busy as one might expect it to be, and at only €3 entry it definitely is worth a look.

Whilst in Bohinj, you can visit the over 700 year old St. John the Baptist church, which demonstrates a fascinating Middle Age architecture and some of the oldest fresco paintings in Slovenia. The church’s style covers the time period from Romanticism to Baroque, and it represents an important cultural and historical monument, which is expected as it is thought that the Church of St. John the Baptist was built in mid-11th century or late 10th century.
For the perfect view of the scenery, there is the enjoyable and exciting cable car trip up to Mount Vogel at 1,535 meters, where you can have spectacular views of the mountain, which is available to climb too if you prefer a more adventurous day activity. The area also includes ideal starting points for short or long hiking tours, either with or without a guide, and there are even diverse culinary options available!

Another day activity option is a guided panoramic boat ride, where two electric boats sail from Lake Bohinj to Zlatorog and Triglavska roža. This can be a great experience for families, especially with children, as there is a lot to take away from the boat ride with special views of the mountains surrounding the lake.
If these nature and outdoor activity ideas sound exciting for you, then start planning your trip to Bohinj now before we reach the winter season! There is still enough time to enjoy the great outdoor views of the mountains and the lake before it gets too cold.
