Big Ben Unveiled After An £80M Makeover

There are many people who have been pleasantly surprised by Big Ben’s unveiling, one of London’s Famous Landmarks; equally, many people have also reacted at the £80 million spent on just “polishing Big Ben”. When the scaffolding was slowly being taken down from the clock tower, on the 31st of December at 12 in the afternoon, Big Ben rang its bell for the first time in four years. Now that a lot more has been revealed, we can see the bolder, shinier, and more polished result after years of work; specifically with the new blue accent on the clock.

£360m on Buckingham Palace…
£200m on a Royal Yacht…
Yet there’s hundreds of thousands of people who will have their lives made more difficult because the Tories are taking off £20 a week from their universal credit https://t.co/ugPPqiPxzi

80m on Big Ben
£20 deduction on universal credit
No free school meals
Can’t raise the minimum wage. Because those are too expensive
I don’t care about Big Ben; it’s a bloody clock. I’d much rather money was spent where needed, like on the NHS, people in poverty etc. The £20 uplift was taken away and £80m spent on a clock?

Ian Westworth, one of Parliament’s team of clock mechanics, said, “It’s iconic – it’s probably the world’s most famous clock, and to have had our hands on every single nut and bolt is a huge privilege.”

Big Ben’s refurbishing was originally expected to cost £29 million, however, the price reached at least £80 million; taking five years to finish the project, it started back in 2017 and is expected to be fully completed in the second quarter of 2022.

What do you think about Big Ben’s new look?
