Best Video Game Theme Songs

By  |

Finding great music is one of the most pleasurable feelings, and even more so when you find a favourite song by accident, which is exactly how I came across some of my own favourites by playing video games. In video games, music is an integral part of the entire experience, therefore, a lot of game soundtracks go through a lot of work to make sure that listeners immerse themselves into the game as much as possible. For me, the most unforgettable games have been ones where the music managed to influence my senses, and this involves things like making me emotional for the characters within the game or getting me excited for an upcoming battle.

Since the gaming experience mostly gets amplified by the music, which leads to a better understanding of the story, I decided to share some of the best video game theme songs so that you can enjoy them as much as I do!

System Shock 2 (1999)

The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. The soundtrack is very cyberpunk and atmospheric, suitable for the game and helpful in terms of finding yourself in tense situations and not getting distracted by the overload of background music.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)

The story is officially set many years before the events of the first two Zelda games. The player assumes the role of Link as he journeys to save Hyrule, defeat the demon king Ganon, and rescue the descendants of the Seven Sages. The game soundtrack became one of the greatest hits upon its release, specifically the track ‘Zelda’s Lullaby’.

The Last of Us (2013)

Players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. The music’s critical reception was positive, as reviewers felt that the music connected appropriately with the gameplay, as well as the minimalist approach of the soundtrack’s composition for the game experience.

Persona 5 (2016)

Persona 5 takes place in modern-day Tokyo and follows a high school student known by the pseudonym Joker who transfers to a new school after being falsely accused of assault and put on probation. Over the course of a school year, he and other students awaken to a special power, becoming a group of secret vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. For this game’s music, the approach was amazing in terms of highlighting each main character and giving them their own personality through their separate theme music. To express the game’s mood, Meguro incorporated strong acid jazz elements into the music, as he wanted the sound to be more realistic than the previous entries to match the visuals of the game.

Beyond: Two Souls (2013)

Jodie possesses supernatural powers through her psychic link to Aiden; growing from adolescence to adulthood while learning to control Aiden and the powers they share, Jodie is faced with a supernatural threat that changes her life. The Beyond: Two Souls gameplay takes us on a spell-binding musical journey following the lifetime of Jodie, as we feel similar emotions, threats, sadness and anger as Jodie, such as when she is bullied or when she is in danger, the music forces us to feel as if we are Jodie, therefore creating a link with us and the character through the soundtracks in the game.

If you have not played any of these games, now is the time to check them out and discover the great sounds played throughout the gameplay! Otherwise, there are many other games that convey powerful messages and emotions through the music, so continue to check out other gaming soundtracks to find some great tunes.
