Anthony Mackie is confirmed to be the lead in the next Captain America film for Marvel.

Anthony Mackie made his first appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, where he played Sam Wilson, also known as the Falcon. Sam Wilson befriends Steve Rogers played by Chris Evans during a morning jog in Washington, D.C. He later helps Rogers and Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow played by Scarlet Johannsen, in taking down Hydra who had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. The character of Sam Wilson is a veteran United States Air Force Pararescue man who flies using a jet pack with articulated wings. He was recruited as a member of the Avengers for his strong and swift combat skills.

In Avengers: Endgame, the 4th instalment of the Avengers series of films, Chris Evans’ character Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, retires his well-known trademark shield onto Sam Wilson, a bittersweet moment as it meant the end of the journey for Chris Evans being seen as Captain America, but a dawn of a new day as we get to experience Anthony Mackie take on that mantel, which if you did watch The Falcon And The Winter Soldier mini series on Disney +, you get to have an insight on the transition that has now come to seeing Sam Wilson as the new Captain America in Captain America 4.

To date, Anthony Mackie has made appearances in six different Marvel films, as well as the aforementioned Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. These six films include Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

It has been four months since the TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finished, which garnered five nominations at the 2021 Emmys. Towards the end of the series, it was already heading towards the direction of Sam Wilson becoming the next Captain America.

Anthony Mackie discussed the significance of his possible role as a Black Captain America. For Mackie, the character’s significance goes far beyond his role in the franchise. He said, “I think the weight of a Black Captain America is the same as the weight of a woman playing Captain Marvel, which is the same weight as any character of any race representing an underrepresented people – race or sex, I should say.”

He continued, “the idea of having a Black Captain America, I feel like it’s more gas on that fire to burn down the systematic nonsense that we were brought up in and we lived in up until now. It’s a new day. It’s a new time. Homophobia, racism, sexism is a part of the past, and a part of that system that we can no longer allow to be recognized as our country or our understanding.”

It is very crucial to focus on the fact that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series was very impactful, given the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. It touched on Black heroes and Black representation, which is demonstrated through the episodes in the series. In the show, Sam Wilson is aware of the discrimination African Americans face. There are scenes of racism included, as well as how Wilson reacts to certain comments or experiences.

Another popular series that Mackie was involved in is Black Mirror. He appeared in the 2019 episode called “Striking Vipers”. Additionally, he took on the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in the film All the Way, and the role of Papa Doc in the film 8 Mile with Eminem. Other well-known films that Anthony Mackie played roles in are The Hate U Give, Christmas with the Coopers, The Hurt Locker and The Adjustment Bureau just to name a few.

No director has been confirmed for Captain America 4, although Malcolm Spellman, the creator of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is set to write for Captain America 4 alongside Dalan Musson, who wrote MCU Disney+ series’ fifth episode “Truth”.

No other casting has been confirmed, however, with Anthony Mackie as the lead, there is a possibility that several other actors from the series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will join the cast for Captain America 4.

Some possibilities include Anthony Mackie’s co-star Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky; Wyatt Russell, who plays John Walker; and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays a possible villain Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

This year, Marvel will be busy releasing films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. In 2022, Marvel has a line-up of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and The Marvels (Captain Marvel sequel).

Due to this, the earliest date Captain America 4 can be released in is sometime in 2023. However, no further comments have been made about official release dates.
