Today marks the last day of The Code Conference that is currently taking place at The Beverly Hilton, and The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills California. The invite only event this year and for the first time ever opened its virtual doors for the nice sum of $125.00, which grants you access to the event and an opportunity to network with top tier tech industry professionals. Amongst the speakers of the event are Marc Benioff, Chair/CEO and Co-founder of Salesforce, Jennifer Daniel, Chair, Emoji Subcommittee, The Unicorn Consortium, Jason Kilar, CEO Warner Media, Joe Holder Founder, The Ocho System, Elon Musk, Technoking, Tesla, Chief Engineer, Spacex, Ted Sarandos Co-CEO, Chief Content Officer Netflix, Satya Nadella CEO Microsoft and many more.

The annual event which started on the 27th of September aims at getting the movers and shakers of the industries to answer some palatable questions as well as provide insight and further information on what their organisations are working on. The events site has stated the following regarding spectator/attendee expectations “Since 2014, Code Conference has been the only technology event where journalists go head to head with the power players in the tech industry. Code breaks news, Code reveals what’s next, and Code is the only place where you can witness producer Kara Swisher asking the hard questions that no one else would dare to ask.”

If you have ever wanted to hear directly from the CEOs and Founders of the giant tech companies, The Code Conference is definitely the event where you not only get to receive information directly from the sources, but you have an opportunity to see them go toe to toe as they discuss and debate on the many questions surrounding the tech industry’s ups and downs and their innovative strategies. One of these questions which have forever been a mystery is Netflix’s viewership data. Whilst speaking at the conference on Monday the Co-CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos said “We’re trying to be more transparent with talent, with the market,” As he spoke, he showcased a series of slides which showed the viewing numbers of shows such as Shonda Rhime’s Bridgerton Season 1 which revealed it to be the most engaged and initially watched Netflix Original show at over 82 million views within its first 28 days, and Lupin coming in second at 76 million views whilst films Extraction and Bird Box came in first and second respectively at 99 million and 89 million views within their first 28 days.

Another slide revealed the total viewing hours which had Bridgerton Season 1 still leading the way for the top 10 series at 625 million viewing hours and Money Heist: Part 4 coming in second with 619 million total worldwide viewing hours. In film Bird Box came in first at 285 million total viewing hours and extraction coming in second with 231 million as illustrated in the charts below.

As he unveiled the show and film numbers, Sarandos said “For a subscription business, engagement really matters, this is a real indicator of value.” When speaking about Stranger Things Season 3 he stated that “Franchises are good, but what you want are hits, Stranger Things is a franchise being born,” somewhat of a indication that there are likely to be spinoffs for the popular 1980s themed show. He also made mention of the currently popular South Korean Hunger Games style show Squid Games estimating it to be Netflix’s biggest show ever, based on the early viewership results holding, which unfortunately were not revealed.

Looking at this rare glimpse into the Netflix matrix, it is no wonder it stands in the lead ahead of competing streaming platforms; this once in a lifetime opportunity that has granted us access to the Netflix viewer engagement and viewing hours; we can only say is likely to tip the scales even further into the Netflix arena as people tend to gravitate towards high numbers.
