5 Biggest Bookshops in the World

By  |

Travelling to beaches and mountains abroad is appealing in its own way, but if you are a bookworm and love travelling, then visiting a bookshop is a must-go during a trip; specifically, bookshops that are big, beautiful, and famous around the world! Do not get me wrong, us bookworms love the cosiness of small stores too, but there is something so breath-taking when visiting an enormous room full of books wherever you look, so if you are looking to travel or are nearby one of the following locations, then visit these bookshops and immerse yourself in the abundance of books available!

Powell’s Book Store, Portland, Oregon

Powell’s Book Store has an impressive 68,000 square feet of retail sales floor, on which you can browse over one million books; the store reportedly purchases 3,000 used books per day, so no two days are the same when cruising through this bookshop! In fact, you may need a map to navigate your way around, which the store provides.

Barnes & Noble, Union Square, New York City

Inside this huge bookshop, there is always a line-up of fantastic events, like author signings, book fairs, workshops, and readings. This is the world’s largest bookseller and leading retailer of content and educational products, with its three floors and a little café at the top, no one can get bored no matter how much time you spend in this large bookshop.

Cook & Book, Brussels, Belgium

Cook & Book is roughly the size of a supermarket, divided into eight themed spaces, and completed with eight eating areas, so if you bring your friends along, you will enjoy the day as much as you would if you were alone browsing the books available.

John K. King Used and Rare Books, Detroit, Michigan

More than a million books are stored inside John K. King Used & Rare Books; it is old-fashioned styled, charming, and they do not have a computer system, so it feels as if you have just stepped back in time. The floor managers have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the books, though they cannot always help you to find a specific book you may need, so come here and spend some time looking through the shelves and picking up whatever you like.

Waterstones, Piccadilly, England

Waterstones is the biggest bookstore chain in the UK and the Piccadilly branch in London is the largest bookstore in Europe; spread over six floors, it is a great place for events, because this particular Waterstones goes all out when it comes to getting dressed up! With a variety of genres and its over eight miles of bookshelves, there is something here for everyone.

Picture yourself sitting in a comfortable position somewhere in the corner of one of these bookshops, reading either one of your favourite titles or discovering something brand new that has captured your interest, and then go ahead and plan your trip; you do not want to miss out on all the fun you could be having in these amazing and ginormous bookshops.
