Are Libraries Still Relevant In The Digital Age?

For years, libraries have been preserving books, providing information, and giving space to readers, but in an age where information is available to all users through digital modes, we begin to question, are libraries still relevant today? It is undeniable that visiting the library is on a decline, which is why many of the libraries are undergoing transformations to turn into a hybrid of traditional print and electronic resources; however, just how much can they continue to evolve to keep pace with the rest of the world?

It is argued by many librarians that library spaces need to become more interactive and modern for the community, only then will it become more appealing to visit. For example, I personally visited the library often during the summer when I was younger as there were competitions held on how many books can you read and how many reviews can you write (we were even given templates for the reviews). I read so much in those few summers and wrote so many reviews, I earned multiple certificates and to this day I still look back at how proud I am for achieving what I did.

A sense of accomplishment when finishing a book needs to be rewarded interactively for younger children, it will not only encourage them to read but it can also create more fun memories for them. For the older age groups, making digital and print books available in the library can be a good start, though holding discussions, author visits, writers’ classes, reviews, and other events can be very useful and will impact how many people visit libraries.

Society is drifting away from books and focusing more on their screens, hence why some studies have said it leads to students losing creativity and having a lack of analytical abilities. Making libraries cater towards specific age groups and become relevant for today’s time can aid in a lot more than we think because it is not simply about reading, it is about community, information, and growth. Having something to offer to the community is the key aspect in staying relevant, and that is something libraries can do in order to stay as relevant as they can.

As libraries today embrace redesigns, making room for computers, meeting spaces, culinary learning centers, and coffee shops to serve their customers, they are following the tradition of adaptation, “from the first medieval libraries that chained their books when visitors surged, to 19th-century libraries that had to make new space for women and children”.

It can be argued that libraries are not in danger from being wiped away by the digital age; “libraries, as symbols of power, have always been under threat when that power was contested or vanquished. And yet, despite all the threats faced by libraries, people have continued to collect books and documents to shape and preserve our collective body of knowledge — and they will continue to do so.”
